I like both GOTO and star hopping. Just took out my N8i for the first time in 2 years and had a blast seeing about 8 objects in the time it would have taken me if I was lucky to find 2 of them from my own light polluted balcony.
When I star hop, I feel like I'm one of those people who just started exploring the sky and mapping the heavens. When I use GOTO, I feel more like the professional astronomer I could have been 
I will say one thing that is nice about having both is that once I have seen an object w/ my GOTO scope, assuming I remember the object at all I will have less doubt when I star hop to it that I have actually found the right object!
