At the risk of dropping this conversation several dozen IQ points, I can't resist modifying the old riddle: If molecular hydrogen is excited in a planetary nebula and no one is around to see it, is it still red?
Judging from this discussion, I guess it is, but you'd be wrong if you say you perceived it
