Bogen 3246 legs with 501 head holds all my center post design binocs 8# or more with ease. Heaviest duty tripod I own. Smooth fluid motion and pretty tall, not as tall at the 3211/3130, but the elevator crank is great. The fluid motions still work very well with a 22x100 or 25x100. I'm 6'1", and maybe need to scrunch down an inch or 3 when looking at zenith.

We have discussed max height of Bogen 3246 tripod before so this post is for those who are less familiar with the Bogen line.

First of all, 3046/3246, are the same tripod . The 3046 has clear(sliver) finish, the 3246 has black anodized finish. The same rule applies to other models: 3051/3251, 3021/3221WN, 3058/3258 etc.

The 3246 tripod EdZ has is an older model with two sections. Tandem legs in the upper setion and a single leg in the lower section. I have a Bogen 3246 purchased in 2001. It has an additonal leg section inside the mid section to extend the tripod another 19". The new version Bogen 3246 is 70.5 inch heigh with just the legs or 89.4 inch with center column fully extended . Add 4 inchs for the tripod head and this tripod is tall enough for 7 footers. Center column travel of the 3246 is 18.9 inchs.

The Bogen 3058 is the tallest, heaviest in the Bogen line . It can reach nearly 9 ft and support a 44 lb load. Wt is 17.4 lbs for the tripod legs alone. Center column travel is ~ 10 inch.

Bogen tripods offer a lot of feature/value for your money. The selection of good tripods that can reach over 6 ft is very limited. Price for a Gitzo MK II 76 inch ht. starts around $330 for the legs alone . I have a QuickSet Sampson tripod rated for 40 lbs and can reach ~80 inch . List price is over $700 for the legs alone. You can buy a new Bogen 3246 WITH 501 fluid head today(OCT 2004) for $339 .
