Yeah Wes,your proposal from picture #2 is also a good one!! The other side of that adapter also holds a metallic-type washer that's held by those 3 screws that you can see,BUT,that could also be ground down,I suppose.Thanks for the suggestion,and as you say,this forum's got a wealth of info. that can be tapped into + help us out!!
