Hi Paul,
In order to answer your question I conducted a little experiment.
I removed the telrad from the base and the 9X50 finder (Base included). I then made the OTA horizontal and removed the tension knob completely. The OTA remains horizontal! I then added the telrad and the 9X50 finder one by one and the OTA remained put!!... still horizontal with the tension knob removed completely!!
I then tried slewing the scope in altitude (knob still removed + telrad + 9X50 finder) and the scope moments were very smooth and the scope came to rest instantly every time I released the force on the OTA...right up to about 86-87 deg...all this with the tension knob removed!! You may feel the scope has too much stiction in altitude, but all this was done with one finger pushes and without any jerks ... no messing with counter weights
As all this was done with the tension knob removed, so when you add an EP, all you need to do is to tighten the knob mildly and you’re good to go!! I’m sure it will handle a the heaviest of EP’s with ease. Many XT10i users also use a paracorr + 12T4 combo without any problem.
I have had this scope since about 6 months and when I read your question, I could not recollect what is it I exactly do during my observing secessions. I guess this is because (Primarily because I'm a newbie, and this is my first scope ) using this scope is so intuitive that nothing about it jumps out at you and bothers you outright.... your too busy observing
About the azimuth, I feel is needs to be smother and I intend to try a lazy susan bearing. I plan on starting a new thread regarding this in a few days as I am aware of quite a few people who have pulled this off successfully with the intelliscope. If that doesnt work out... theres always the scopestuff ebony star atz. kit
I think you should go through the review by Ed Ting. This was one of the reviews I had read before buying this scope and have found it to be one of the most accurate and objective reviews on the XT10i. Here’s the link:

All in all, I couldn’t have asked for more!! ... I really love my XT10i
