Hi Don,
I have found the seeing from where I observe to be pretty stable. I regularly observe between 240X-300X and I have never found the altitude bearing to be troublesome at all!! I usually have my 10XW and a TV Big barlow, and I turn the tension knob about a quarter of a turn and I find the motion to be very smooth, jerk free!
... the azimuth axis is where some work is needed. Tracking at 240X is OK (bearable)... not great, but at higher powers it does become more difficult.
I am aware about the Lazy Susan bearings developing dimples, that’s precisely I plan to start a thread regarding this mod. I am aware that several members here have carried out this mod. about a year back, so I intend to find out about how it has worked out over time.
Another way would be cylindrical bearings instead of ball bearings... line contact VS point contact. I’m still exploring. If all else fails.... I'll go to the EbonyStar-Teflon mod.... just like to try the most cost effective method first
