That is normal as I have had one EQG out of 4 that made a bit less ramp up noise than the others.
It happens in the very beginning of the slew of a goto and then settles out. Yours, it sounds like, you were manually stopping and going at a high rate (4+).
There is a thread somewhere here that describes the noise and someone did a great job textually mimicking the noise.
Seems somewhat dependent on temperature too but it is believed to be due to resonant frequencies and the energy generated to ramp up the motor so quickly on the stepper.
Maybe there is a better explanation out there which is welcome but the bottom line is that it is normal off the shelf.
