The four holes on the bottom of the FAR-Sight surrounding the 1/4"x20 mounting hole are alignment holes that can be used with the location pin found on many tripod adapter plates to prevent the FAR-Sight from rotating on the top of the adapter plate. The holes are positioned at 90 degrees to accommodate different pin locations on various adapter plates. The location of the holes also allow the user to decide on the orientation of the FAR-Sight in order to reach closer to zenith when mounted on some tripod heads which have an adapter plate with the alignment pin. This can be accomplished by pointing the vertical adjustment handle away from the observer. It is not as convenient as the normal orientation, but it does allow the tripod head to tilt further back.
