Ron,
The only thing I really know about BK-7 and Bak-4 is their differing indices of refraction. I'd venture to guess that the denser glass is softer and hence a bit faster to work. I'd also venture to guess that the denser glass is a bit less transparent, but if so probably not enough to get wrapped around the axle over. As to homogeneity, that most likely depends on the care taken in annealing.
The only real advantage of BaK-4 (in prisms) that I'm aware of, from an end user's point of view, is that its ability to accommodate more steeply converging light cones before light loss is incurred.
