If this was the case, they wouldn't be building new malls. They check out a location, sometimes years in advance, to see what traffic (buying) there is. If it wasn't a profitable situation, they wouldn't be there. Driving by ours, the parking lots are pretty full; telling me that many people still shop the "old fashioned" way.
