DON'T give up!

Lets start with what mount and scope you are using, and what is the focal ratio.

You have around 2 sec. which will show plenty of faint DSO's.
In my case, I use the Meade LX200 10" with a F6.3 focal reducer and a diagonal. With just 2 sec. I get pretty amazing images.

Let me know what your using.
