I buy a lot of binoculars in pawn and junk shops. A quick and easy test of collimation is to look at something distant that really stands out from the background, like the writing on a distant shop sign, traffic sign, or even a single tree on the horizon. Once you have found the object, slowly move the binoculars away from your face, while still looking at the object. This makes it more difficult for the brain to 'force' the two images together, and they will separate if the collimation is out. You will get eyestrain, or at least feel uncomfortable if the error makes the images appear VERTICALLY displaced from each other and also if the images displace HORIZONTALLY, so that your eyes have to DIVERGE. The eyes can tolerate some Convergence, as this is what we do when we look at a very close object.

Ridiculous binocular collection
I've cut it twice and it's still too short.
