I thought I remembered that Gordo Cooper also was involved in propulsion, and apparently he was -- but for the Redstone, while Slayton worked on the Atlas. Here's a link to Cooper's obituary in the Marshall Center newsletter; at the bottom of page 3 in the "Did You Know?" box it mentions this assignment (link goes to PDF file).
