Just tried DarkAdapted. Text that was black on white changed to reddish-black on white. Since the white was the problem, this wasn't good. Maybe one simply needs to modify the Windows theme to change that?
I remember once downloading something that changed the screen theme to green text on black background in place of black text on white. Maybe combining that with DarkAdapted would do the job.
p.s. On Palms, rather than laptops, one can use Khroma to create a night theme with red text and black background. Not all apps will respect it, but a lot will. One can then use my NightMode desk accessory (available in the 1src.com freeware section) to toggle themes.
