Gimp is a good start although only 8 bits it has may Photosop functions...and also layer creation.

Iris has a great filter called adaptive filter for smoothing out noisy images. Also a gradient removal tool.The contrast adjustment in Iris is like a poor mans curves.gamma and light balance are also good for tweaking colors and contrast. Also saturation works well....I beleive Iris is 16 bit though.

You may want to look at nebulosity for 45.00 It captures stacks aligns filters debayers combines stretches. It drives my DSI canon Xt and SPC900 and also my SBIG ST-7 if need be.
