As of version 2.5, GIMP uses the GEGL (Generic Graphics Library) which is a graph based image processing framework.

It supports floating point handling and processing and output of larger 8bit, 16bit integer and 32bit floating point per component buffers larger than RAM.

The version 5 releases are not really stable, but GIMP is near version 2.6 and, when it arrives, should be much more capable.
