Photographic vs. Visual Detail

I have seen some photos that show incredible details of lunar features that were taken with 8"-12" scopes. Are these photos indicative of what you can see with the scope visually, or is it possible to see much more detail from the photos, given today's photographic equipment and techniques? Thanks.
