Thanks for the comments. I believe these views are readily achievable with a 4 inch decent refractor and the hyper color on modest settings/14 second integration. The sky was clear and the Milky Way did show as a faint cloud across the sky, but it was definitely not an exceptional night. The output used the S-video output to the Sanyo screen. Color was set on 50%, brightness set to give a background that was not black but a little greyish, contrast set high. So the view (in my mind and experience) was good but not exceptional. The object is at nearly it's highest postion for our lattitude.
As for the text and lesson, have to give credit to God for that one.
Chris, below about 20 degrees above horizon, this object will lose a lot unless the night is really good. However, you should have comparable precision and color for the Dumbell on a decent night.
Jon...as for the "reds", the HC camera shines with reds. I actually had trouble matching a red that was bright enough to represent my screen view.
Now, in contrast, a larger aperture will see less of the outlying area but give much better color in the central region. The M8 brightest area on my 12.5 in Dob shows more bright pinks, a little more yellow, a few white areas, and the reds are just as bright in places.
