Seems like a good call. Fixed eyepieces are much better, but if your budget for astronomy is slim, it does make sense to go for a zoom. That said, adding a second eyepiece, even one of the economy models seems like a must to me; Try an do Hyperion Zoom + 32mm Plössl. Once you have the two, you should be golden for a while. Gear-itis and Aperture fever might catch-up to you eventually, but with that, you can do everything within the reach of your telescope's capability, and can concentrate for a while on getting Atlases, Planispheres and field guides to help you progress.
