If you visit the link ( Looking for Mars Polar Lander ) I provided in the original post of this thread you will see that the images being used in the search are from HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) which is one of the instruments on MRO. So yes, MRO instrumentation is being used in this project.
