Hi Edwin I used fery fine steel wool to clean the oxidation spots off an old Bogen tripod. I don't know about using it on a telescope, or painted surfaces, tho...unless you are going to repaint. For repainting prep, I prefer steel wool over sand paper, but thats just me.
