Hi Colin,
You might be interested in this then. I did something very similar to this a couple of years ago. I waited until the RASNZ astro conf. and distributed the 'cameras' then, since I knew they would be distributed around NZ, spreading the 'risk' and geographic latitude. (see the comments on the individual photos for the lat & long & direction thet the camera was pointing)
It's possible to see that the solar arc's are flatter from cameras located at the higher latitudes (eg Bob Evans in Invercargill) than from cameras located at lower latitudes (eg Deborah's in Dargaville) He won't have used a shutter. Those gaps will show periods of cloudy weather. If you look at the traces from John Burt & John Drummond's cameras in the sunny Hawkes Bay you can see that they showed similar traces as they are both located in Gisborne.
I used what paper I had, - some very old paper of unknown vintage, and a developer that wouldn't have been used for many years, but I wasn't going to get new developer for just this project. I tested it first on the paper from my solar camera. I'd have had to send away to Auckland for developer these days, - it's no longer available locally.
