When I first tried the 15X45's (the first model Canon released), I knew that my Fujinon 16X70's were going bye-bye. Yes, hand held, the smaller aperture was a match for the larger, heavier Fujis. I think it's important to stress the "hand-held" aspect when trying to answer your question, though, because, if you plan to use a tripod most of the time, the larger apertures will be superior.
