Hi Mike,
Interesting "observation" you made there--no pun intended.
Back in the 1950s, my buddy and I would observer from very dark skies in northern West Virginia.
I used a 3" Criterion reflector (my first scope); my buddy used a 3" Unitron refractor (his first too).
We had no street lights then, and the city was basically shut down at night. I remember clearly how easy and resolved M57 was once we were able to locate it. Of course, the refractor did render a brighter, crisper image, but I would never admit that to my buddy. Aha, the good 'ol days.
