So is there agreement that while keeping magnification constant you'll never see less with larger apertures, but depending on the extent of light pollution, the gain by a larger aperture might be far less than what one might expect? This sounds right.
It's just that on these boards, you'll often hear repeated over and over: "big exit pupils are bad under light pollution - smaller exit pupils will give more contrast" - without any qualifications - as if to imply that you'll see more contrast, more stars, by simply reducing the aperture of an instrument...which is untrue regardless of the amount of light pullution.
Rather it should be: "for a given aperture, you'll often see more at higher magnifications despite the smaller exit pupil, not because of it."
