Patrick, I agree with what you say, but that's not the whole story.
Binocular observing is not about seeing the most/deepest. If so, we'd all switch to larger instruments (let alone a dob). What's also very important is getting a pleasing natural-looking image which makes you feel 'involved' with the subject.
An image that's too bright due to light pollution, distracts significantly from the 'aesthetics' of the binocular view. IMHO of course.
