I'm sure that while you could probably point to posts that just state go with a smaller exit pupil, you can also read throughout this forum the explanations for why one should select an appropriate match of mag/ap for the conditions. Often you will see the suggestion made to a user who plans to view from a light polluted area. You will see recommendations to go with something like a 10x50 instead of an 8x56. In this case both mag and ap change but the user would get a little large image scale and a lot less washed out image.
Keeping mag constant, in the same light polluted conditions I would always recommend a 10x50 over a 10x70, or depending on what info the user has given, maybe an 8x40 vs an 8x56. not only will the image be less washed out, but the binocular would weigh less. Will it see more? No, probably not. Will it see less? No, probably not. And that is a big point. Don't use a 22oz hammer to do a job that a 16oz hammer will handle very nicely.
If someone is set in their decision on aperture, let's say they are fixed on wanting 70mm, but they indicate they will observe from light pollluted skies, I would never recommend a 10x70. I would probably suggest a 15x70, just because that's the next common size available.
There are very few people out there that should be buying their equipment to accomodate the best conditions they might ever get too. Simply because 99% of the time they won't be observing in those best conditions and that would mean 99% of the time they own the wrong binocular.
