It's a Sony monochrome CCD 1600x1200 4.4 micron pixels... slightly smaller than those in my DMK41AF02, so it should be slightly less sensitive. There is no shortage of available light when imaging the sun so that should not be a limitation. The big chip running with the older firewire protocol (1394a) does read out slowly, though... that is a drawback.
