This is an early 1950’s Unitron 4 inch scope which has been substantially modified. There are several non-original parts on this scope but it is a great daily driver. When I got this scope the objective had been tampered-with and was very poor. The scope was charming and historical but not usable. I replaced the original objective with a superior one. The replacement lens has no markings on it but it has a large air space and I think Jaegers was the only company to make them like that. The focal length is just right and the Unitron dew shield will still fit over it. Performance on the replacement objective is superb. I have seldom seen a 4 inch f/15 achromat as good as this one. The objective has no major scratches or flaws but in addition to a little dust it has some tiny specks that appear to be in between the lens elements. Since the performance is beautiful I have not attempted to open it up for cleaning.

The tube has many large and small blemishes, scrapes and scratches but no major dents. The finder is a Celestron 10x40 adapted to fit the original Unitron brackets. The finder objective appears to have some de-cementing as shown in a photo. Despite this problem it still works fine for the purpose. The legs are replicas of folding legs from a 4 inch Polarex. They are made of solid Mahogany and more than up to the task. The drawtube accepts 1.25 accessories.

The scope is perfectly balanced and operates most easily with the original Unitron dew shield removed. The replacement lens has an integral short dew shield that is sufficient in most cases. However, with the Unitron dewshield in place it looks exactly like the original Unitron 150. If you opt to use it in that configuration the scope will be a bit nose heavy. Still very workable, though. It’s easy to switch back and forth.
