I designed and built this telescope to be an updated version of a classic refractor. It has an excellent quality Carton 80mm f/15 achromatic objective lens in a Carton fully collimatable lens cell. USA made 6061-T6 aluminum tubing was used for the entire process. The length of the main tube was chosen to accommodate a 2” mirror diagonal with many common ultra wide field eyepieces, and has enough rearward focuser travel for a 1.25” diagonal. The aluminum finish is ultra hard enamel appliance epoxy.

Incident light is nicely managed with the use of ScopeStuff flocking material lining the dewshield, main tube and focuser drawtube. It has a GSO single speed Crayford focuser with 2” compression ring visual back and 1.25” compression ring adapter. Included is a pair of Orion 90mm tube rings with added stainless thumb nuts, an Agena 11” dovetail bar, and a hand formed aluminum carry handle.

This telescope features a custom solar filter using Baader solar film and an objective lens cover, both made from the same 6061-T6 aluminum. Both use the same secure mounting solution as the dewshield by fastening three small quality knurled thumbscrews (a spare set of three are included). Baader Planetarium recommends mounting their film in card stock cells due to film stretching from thermal expansion if mounted in metal cells. The Baader solar film in this cell is isolated between two rings of high density card stock which floats between two rings of aluminum under light spring tension.

This telescope presents really nice views of the sun, the moon, the planets and double stars. I built this telescope for fun, and I’m willing to pass it along to a fellow stargazer who will use it more than I do, for less than what I paid for the parts and materials. This telescope is pictured in front of Facebook’s Prineville, OR data center for the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse. Local pick up in Phoenix, AZ or will consider meeting within a reasonable distance. $350. Thanks for looking!
