This is a leg spreader that I designed for an Al's Astro tripod (images 2 and 3). It can also be used on any tripod with a CG-5 hub (images 6 and 7).

It reduces tripod vibration by pre-loading tripod legs to improve rigidity.

I built two of them. One I sold with the Al's Astro tripod, and this is the other. It is unused other than for taking the pictures.

Like Al's leg locker, this one hangs from the CG-5 hub via a threaded M10-1.5 rod. But it has straight instead of curved edges. This provides increased area for holding eyepieces and other equipment.

I made the leg spreader from 3/4" red oak to match Al's tripod, and finished it with three coats of lacquer. It has stainless steel washers installed in recesses on both sides to protect the wood from the knobs used to secure the spreader against the tripod legs. Two pass-through knobs ride on the threaded rod. One will always sit under the spreader (image 4), and will be used to push it into the legs. The second could be used to tighten the mount against the hub independently of the spreader, or it could be turned around and used to ensure that the rod remains orthogonal to the spreader (image 5) as it is pushed by the other knob into the legs.

The distance from the center of the spreader to each tripod leg is 6 1/2". The length of the threaded rod is 13".
Included in this sale are:
1) the leg spreader
2) a threaded rod machined for CG-5 hubs
3) two pass-through knobs for securing the spreader against the tripod legs
