Just purchased this little Nikon S65 refractor and mount. Not well packed but it arrived safely some how..! Condition when it arrived was definitely on the rough side. Basic 'restoration' consisted of:
Cleaning (everything except the optics: tube, bolts, threads, legs, mount) Rust removal and polishing: bolts, fasteners, and declination shaft Proper mechanical setup (washers locations, corrected fastener orientations) Sanded and oiled the tripod legs but I did not re-stain. Painting: nearly everything. Fortunately I had Nikon green paint! Dent removal. Only the dew cap arrived with a very small pinpoint dent - partial success
The little guy just needed some TLC! Photo taken with the mighty Nikon 100mm F12 ED refractor. Initial testing of the optics: they look sharp! Some chromatic aberration as expected but not excessive. The mount itself is a joy. It is rock solid. Far better than a Unitron 60mm I had in the past. Nicely overbuilt.
