Can anyone help me figure out how to goto a star by entering an SAO#. It says to enter the left digits. Of course, I try, but when I enter the fourth or fifth number it seems to go back to the first number. What are the XX for at the end of the numbers? Eventually, I get to a screen where I can press up and down keys to go through the SAOs starting from 0. That doesn't do me much good since there are thousands or numbers. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Yes, that is confusing. Here's the paragraph from the manual. Maybe try a time in daylight with a "dummy" alignment. I've tried this and it does work but I scratched my head over this for a while. My problem was that the star I was looking for was under the horizon.

When entering the number for a SAO star, you are only required to enter the first four digits of the objects six digit SAO
number. Once the first four digits are entered, the hand control will automatically list all the available SAO objects
beginning with those numbers. This allows you to scroll through only the SAO stars in the database. For example, in
searching for the SAO star 40186 (Capella), the first four digits would be "0401". Entering this number will display the
closest match from the SAO stars available in the database. From there you can scroll down the list and select the desired
object.

I hope this helps at least a little bit.

Buill is correct but Honestly I never or almost hardley ever do the scroll after entering the 1st 4 numbers ...takes much longer then just punching in the correct number

However you have to remember as Bill stated that Stars with fewer then 6 numbers have to have a leading ZERO punched in..

I park my scope on Polaris then hibernate it when I shut down so I just punch in 000308

Bob, that's a great idea. Wish I had thought of it.
