I've emailed the poster for more info, but any initial guesses on what this scope is? Listed at $25.

Looks like a Tasco 60/700 Alt/Az (fork mount); early/mid '70's (pre-red tube). The box is puzzling, though...

Jae is correct! Email reply said: "BUSHNELL Sky Chief II 6omm - 800 mm"

Anything redeeming about this scope, then? Or is this the classic "department store scope"? Worth $25 for local pickup?

Well, the standard 60mm is only 700mm. 800mm is a little better in the CA department. I'm not too fond of alt-az's, but I do have one ( a Scope Orbit) and its a good quick set up for the Moon or Sun. Surprisingly, it has one of the best corrected objectives I own. But (BIG but)...once these kinds of scopes started coming in cardboard boxes I think the quality was already picking up speed downhill fast... If you can pick it up cheap, you might consider it, but if you are looking for a better value in the collectability dept., look for an older one in a wood box, preferably with wood and felt dividers, not styrofoam. I'd say $25 is a fair price, and you might get a very good glass with it.

Good luck.

Alll right .... :jump: the winna !!

From memory, one sample, the tube was a composite material and not metal, everything else was nice metal- notch higher in quality. The legs were a nicer than common hardwood, the balance on the mount is tail heavy with a long Alt fine adjustment. Harder to use heavier eyepieces.

The lens seemed pretty sharp. Overall I'd say much better than any dept store scope. Bottom line - easiliy worth $25 for local pickup.

Report in after pickup please

I recall the Tasco 9TE-5 as being a tad sharper....
