"For these long scopes I would opt for a good, solid GEM with a pier instead of a tripod."
Gospel!
The vibration suppression pads on the pier also make a significant improvement in, well, suppression of unwanted vibration.
Cheers,
Jim

Scale comparison (Orion 100ED - a 100mm, F/9 APO vs. the Antares 105/1500 at f/14-ish):

Note: the OTA on the shorter 100ED is about 3 feet long. The Antares 105/1500 *is* a monster.

Thanks Jim! Great photos of your setup! Right now I'm looking at a Vixen GPD2 mount on an Antares pier with pads. That should hold the 105mm(?) 1500mm steady enough for West Texas winds!

I ordered mine with the old fashion rack and pinion focuser. I've been very pleased with it. I bought a plain Jane CG5 mount and it is very stable even tho its tripod mounted. Next will be an extension pier but its very usable as is.
