It looks like the alt-az mount with a counterweight. Its those little extras that make scopes like this special.

Howdy folks! The ad states, "The counter balance is missing as well as the fine motion device.". I would think the seller means the fine motion cables like on the Unitron models. How would someone go about replacing these items? Thanks, Tim

I was looking through astromart to see if one of these had sold recently, and a very similar 1953 Nippon Kogatu sold back in March of 2007. I couldn't get a good idea of the sale price because it said "$1" which I'm sure was not the final price. It did have a good picture that shows the counterweights and slow motion control which are missing on the *bay listing.

Goto Kogaku and Nippon Kogaku were different scopes. The link to Nikon Historical Society in the aution ad has link to better pictures of this type of mount and scope.

Tempting, but hard to justify!

If its any thing like the three I have had a chance to use Its better than any little f15 refractor around. The views thur my 5CM and Dans 6.5 CM are like that of a Tak triplet or old Zeiss AS lens. Steve Kennedy said after looking thru mine WOW!! How did they do that?? They are the cream of the crop telescopes. As far as missing parts forget it finding a part would be close to impossible. This makes #4 that I have even seen. The eyepices sell for $450 each when they surface! :foreheadslap: And I sure would like a 25mm??? OOOO and a 6mm
1952 5CM complete and close to mint. Lucky find!!

The price was $825 including shipping. These two scopes are not similar in mount design, although the Goto has a Nippon Kogaku lens.

Nippon Kogaku Means = Japan National Science or something close to that.

That’s the first time I have heard that the GOTO company Used Nikons Objectives. I was told the founder of Goto was an ex employee of the Kogaku (nikon) company. And that Goto made there own lenses. That’s what John told me!! Also an interesting article I read said the in 1950 Kogaku (nikon) contracted with Zeiss to hire three Zeiss Lens makers to come to Japan on a three year contract to help design and train his people to make optics for telescopes. Thus the wonderful Kogaku objectives and eyepieces you see from the early 1950s. That article is floating around the net I have been trying to find it again. Anyhow I know the Steve’s 6" was made completely by the Goto Company and it say Kogaku all over it. But the companies were in a strict competition with each other for a very limited market at the time.
