Astronomy is a fine publication. Although the cover art for its December 2004 issue was a bit sensational. It looked like something from a Superman comic and in the lower right corner we read, “A city-sized asteroid hurtles toward Earth, about to unleash devastation”.
But that’s not the reason I let my subscription lapse. Astronomy has no equivalent of Sky & Telescope’s Focal Point column. By having Focal Point, Sky & Telescope is giving its readers the opportunity to write for the magazine. Sky & Telescope is letting the readers know that it cares about there opinions.
Astronomy might publish your letter to the editor but that’s not the same as writing a real opinion piece. What’s more, I have spoken with a number of people who think Focal Point is the best part of Sky & Tele.
