I'm one of those sticklers for detail and I can't seem to find any information on when William Marshall Smart (of Celestial Mechanics and Spherical Astronomy fame) died and where he is buried. I found A. E. Roy's delightful history of the Glasgow Observatories on-line, but there is no mention of when Professor Smart passed away. Also, bibliographic records from various libraries revealed nothing either in that regard.
Sounds like Prof. Smart led an interesting life, perhaps one worthy of a lengthier biography than A. E. Roy's.
Thanks for any and all information - MacP

hi there,
I stumbled across this link which has a list of publications with an obituary note (W.M. passed away on 17 Sept. 1975). If you scroll down the list of persons you'll see the references against his name.

Thank you kindly, John. Exactly what I needed. Interesting site as a bibliography for astronomer obituaries. Kind of surprised that W. M. Smart didn't garner more than three obits.
