Ok, there have been some folks out there who are saying this isn't an APO, so I decided to let folks judge for themselves.

See: http://hatchet.badax....us/~tomt/ed80/

These targets that all typically are very tough on CA in the daytime, and it would be fairly obvious.

I'll take some more as I get time, including some lunar pics but I figured this might be food for thought.

What do you guys think? (warning for dial up users, the pictures may take a couple of minutes to load...)

Great pics Tom. I think it shows that the ED80 has no noticeable c.a. during daylight use. That pic with the sign was a fine example. Does anyone have equipment at their club that could measure c.a.? I would be interested to know just how well the ED80 corrects, as compared to more expensive apos. If it does a good job at the eye piece and in a lab, we have to ask ourselves why others are so expensive in that aperture. Yes, quality of build and ect. but really that much more?

Great shots, Tom! Thanks for posting those.

My ED80 continues to impress me.

Sam,

Most of the reports that I've heard claim it to be slightly better than the TV85.

It's certainly comparable to my TV102 and SDF.

Bill,

I agree, optically, it's a heck of a scope.

If someone were smart, they would source those lenses and put it in an OTA that's truly top notch.

Yes, and increase the size of the objective to 6" or greater.

Say Tom, I see that you've skillfully "censored" the ****' picture :rainbow: with the fence railing. Or perhaps, there was an instance of concentrated "purple halo" :smirk: in that area that you didn't wanna reveal to us?

Ron ole buddy, I'm sure I'll hear that from *someone* at some point.

Looks like it passes the "duck" test to me.

(BTW - I hear Orion has come out and just said it's FPL-53.)

It might be nothing but I notice the slightest yellow on the bottom side of the moon. Is that what you see in the ep? If it is that's pretty darn good for a $429 refractor!

Sam, what you see as yellow in that shot looks a little more red to me. But there is a very very fine hint of color visually. It's very comparable to the level of color in my TV102 and Genesis SDF.

If you look *very* critically you can also see some purple on the limb above that.

The moon was only 20 - 25 deg or so high, so there may be some atmospheric refraction at play as well.

I'm seeing a hint of red on the left of the image and yellow at the bottom, but it is not in the least objectionable to me.

Looks great.

Hi Tom,
I saw lots of colors .... blue skies, brown tress and horses, green street signs. I didn't see any pretty violet fringes though!
