Bill,
if you think the 5" has bad color you should look thru the 6", twice as bad........
I sure hope Schultz never ever looks thru a decent APO, boy is he gonna be hooked!
Personally I thought the 5" has just great figure with very little color for an achro, now I really want a 80ED bad! Dave

Too bad, Bill.
However, before sending the scope back on Astromart, could you treat us with a little review pitting up the AR5 against the ED80 on a variety of objects? You could wait for the scope to be sold before publishing the review :smirk:
And hopefully, maybe after doing the shootout you will realize the scope is worth keeping! don't let one disappointing night ruin it all (there will be no marriage-related metaphor this time!)

I was hoping too, Tom! Oh, well. I suppose it'll go back to Astromart. Yeah, the CA was a little more than I was expecting. Also, the focuser was just too flimsy for me. And using that big thing, I missed the convenience & compactness of my little ED80! (Boy that ED80 can spoil a person, huh?)

On a good note, I FINALLY sold the 4"! I just got the e-mail from PayPal telling me I have cash (I love those! :jump:). So, off to the UPS Store it goes!

Dave, I agree about Schultze!

Matt, that may be a possiblity! I'll keep that in mind.

The color in mine is not objectionable, even on brighter objects. Maybe I got one of the better figured ones. I get pinpoint stars and good rings on a star test. I'm very happy with it actually.

It's no matter for DSO's anyway.

Really. I get the strangest stares from passing automobiles when they see this SAM launcher in the driveway on a 4' pier.

I'm about 50' from the roadway, and it still looks huge from there.

Yes; it looks like quite a machine. The 5" is about the same length but for some reason it doesn't seem as large when looking at it.

Mine looks even longer with the 15" dewshield in front.

Total length at prime focus is around 59". Just shy of five feet long.

Shultze,
Don't ever look through an apo !!!!!!! My mind has been tainted with the images
Bill,
Sorry about the clouds, but if you look at the weather channel - you sent me the clouds, not the other way around. :p :p
Glad you sold the 100mm. So whatcha buyin'? You are just selling everything to buy a BIG apo - aren't you? Don't worry, I won't tell your wife.
The seeing was just brutal!!! I have never seen anything like that. Literally like looking through a mirage on an asphalt road in August.
Tom,
I talked to Al M off line and he confirmed that with the seeing as bad as it was - CA is magnified in scopes. The color wasn't terrible (quite good compared to my old ST80), and it will be better in the future.
Dim stuff, open clusters, and quick peeks at the brighter stuff was the order of the day with this scope anyway.
Clear skies,

Scott

Scott, I don't have any immediate plans to buy another scope (famous last words, huh?). I sure can't afford a nice big apo! I'm just trying to get rid of stuff I don't use & get some cash.

However, if anybody here would like to trade a TeleVue 4" apo of some sort for a mint Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray bass, I'll swap! (I'm only half-joking!)

Tom, I might just do that!

Charles, thanks! Right now I'm perfectly happy with my ED80. But I'm always interested in trying other equipment!
