I'm glad to see where this C-8 ended up at. I was bidding on it to. Glad to see that it went to someone who knows about telescopes. Keep us updated on the work.

First thing I think I'll try is cleaning it up with some solvent. Think mineral spirits would be a good starting point? I don't want to risk damaging the paint if it's salvageble underneath the grime.
Then, probably regreasing the baffle tube would be a good next thing.
It's really windy, still, so I don't plan on taking it outdoors tonight. And tomorrow night I'll be getting ready for the mirror class. Flying out Thursday morning.

Great score! I was eying that up too.
I know this is going to sound silly but......there is silicon spray, used to lubricate aluminum window panes, that I have used to get grime off. I first spray with the silicon and rub with a cloth, after all the grime is off, then I spray with a foaming window cleaner. It works well for me.

Now is the time to place bets, hmmm..., as to when you will complete the restoration. I am certain that everyone is waiting for that day. Perhasp you can keep sending updates as you restoration proceeds.

Interesting! I'm going to try to read the label info that shows up under this labelmaker label, and see if I can make any sense of that. ...probably going to be next week before I can get to it, though.

That black plate on the back of the rear cell is interesting, that is where the concentric focuser would mount on the very first orange C8. They only made 125 concentric focus C8's before deciding it was to expensive to manufacture. Yours must of been using up the last of that model before the one we know today went into production.

There's also no boss in the cell casting for the focuser knob - the black thingy is screwed on (and the holes for the screws are too big, as the countersinks cut into the outside edge).

Is that from Piekel's "book?" I need to order that.
Does anyone talk about sources for the paint? I doubt mine can be cleaned up enough to look truly great, so if I have to repaint it, I'd like to get as close to original as possible.

My club has a C-8 that has the center focusing ring. I believe the serial number is 119.
As for the paint, your does not have the standard power coat finish that we know how as the "classic" Celestron orange. The material on yours and my clubs 'scope was once a Velvet textured rubberized finish. Some of what looks like dirt on the paint is actually a dark green primary coming thru.
Many years ago I saw a C-8 that also had the center focusing ring but was painted with a dark green velvet finish. The owner stated it came that way from Celestron that way and said that Edmund Scientific had one on display in their showroom that was also painted the same.
Another interesting feature is the glass used to make the corrector. On our clubs unit it looks to be optical BK-7 since it is "water white" and a little thicker then newer C-8s.

Here is a picture of my old orange tube C-8 #28, which came with a table top stand. I drilled an extra hole in the table top mount so it could be bolted to a tripod. There were two latitude adjusters on mine...one on each side of the bolt. I replaced one of them with a small turnbuckle so latitude adjustment would be easier. I have to push forward and turn on the RA knob in order for mine to turn without slipping; it was that way when I bought it, and so I think that is normal. Please keep us updated with your cleanup project as my paint is in pretty bad shape as well.
Latitude adjuster. Is this thing original? It looks as though it would be hard to adjust with the scope on the wedge. The wingbolts sure don't look original. What was?
RA slow mo question.
It appears to be some sort of friction gizmo, not a spur gear? Because it slips a lot. ...either that or most of the teeth are stripped off!

That's a great idea. I do have a tripod and wedge with my ~1980 C-8, though. Most of the time I put that C-8 on either my EM-10 or NJP mount, though. Presently, it's in the storage case while I've been using the Cave 8" f/7 and my Kludge 6" f/10.3 Newts for imaging Mars.
Robert: I'll have to check out Bob's book, too.
Dave: I wonder if my local autobody shop could find matching paint? He does antique car restorations, but I was surprised he couldn't tell me where to find wrinkle black paint for the Cave. Turned out Mac's Antique Auto Parts sells it for really reasonable prices, though.
But that Celestron paint isn't much like anything else I've ever seen!

I'm looking at a CL ad for a Celestron G8 scope, which is reasonably priced at $450 (along with CG-5 mount, minus tripod). Google turns up precious little info on G8 - is it similar to your C8?

Nice new scope. I trust that you will be bringing it to Mt. Pinos in August for the "classics" star party. As much as I enjoyed looking through your Jaegers I think that I'll like this one even better since I have one a bit like it.

Is it an orange tube on a CG-5? If so, they're pretty far apart in age.
I may actually have a conflict during the first week of August - a meeting in Montana that I need to go to. Hope not, though.
It might be fun to bring along the C-8 and the Cave, if I do get to go, though.
