With a 50mm plossel you shouldn't need a finder. 8lb counter weight may be needed. :D

How high towards zenith can you go before you bump things?

Ron, it goes past zenith by a few degrees so I have full movement with this mount. I also think the weight of the scope is within the means of this mount also...I'll determine the whether or not the tripod legs are up to the challenge later this evening (currently have clear skies! :jump:)

That's a pretty good trick then. It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the mount does - and those legs. Maybe you'll have to fill the tube with helium to make it lighter.... :D

Hey Tom,
Are you sure those legs can take the extra weight of the red dot? ;)
Looks like you did a great job with the project.
I hope your first light with scope/mount is great. Enjoy the evening. :)
I have nothing but clouds in South MS. :( I appear to have sacrificed myself and stole all of your clouds.
I hope it clears up for this weekend.

Scott, patience...your hawk will be here by the weekend. You will definitely get more clear nights than I (I used to live on the gulf coast for many, many years (and miss it terribly)). You'll be viewing and I'll be complaining about clouds.

Have you thought about a Solar filter yet? Doubles your chances of getting observing time. 50% daylight/50% dark. Can't be cloudy all the time, and your SV should give great images with the longer focal length to control CA. More toys to ponder :D

More ways to empty your wallet :(

But what a fantastic way to ensure our poverty

I am lucky with my location. Even in the Winter, the temp is usually quite reasonable.
Enjoy the scope.

Tom;

Looking good man!

Hope your night holds up. The winds are supposed to kick up tonight.

I'm heading for some views of the moon.

Keep us posted.

Keith, I had to give up...my 3yo was so busy "helping" that we ended up just looking at the moon and letting him gawk at it (he loved it). I tried to get some moon shots but could never get my webcam to focus. I used it with the diagonal and without and could not get focus...need a lot more time to play with that one! The view were really good though and the mount actually tried to align with vega (missed by only a few degrees).

I found myself fighting the NexStar more than anything else tonight...even my 3yo (Rob)!!! Hope you get some good views...I think we are in for another long stretch of clouds.

Tom;

3 yr old help. I remember those days. Sometimes fondly, mine ore older teens now. Get 'em hooked while they are young. My daughter was always in my shop, now she wants tools of her own. :D

I got out about the time you came in. The clouds ran me out about 9:30. Tried to get some pictures but no joy. Got to learn to manually focus the digital camera.

I found myself fighting the NexStar more than anything else tonight...

Aren't computers wonderful things.:smashpc:

Yeah storms for the next few days, and my zoom EP is on the way. Oh well.

Come on down when you get the chance. I'm sure Bill would show up from LA and we could have a Cloudynights Deep South "Small Scope" Star Party.

Hi Tom,
That scope would look great on an EQ6!

Hey Ron ..... I finally saw the your mirror this morning! I usually work in Preston on Thursdays, but we had a power outage because of high winds. I'm at Sirius Optics today.

Hi,
Jupiter is getting better and better. I like some of you guys and gals to test a few filters for me. I'll give out 5 filters to the first five to respond here. Let me know what kind of telescope you'll use.

Afterwards send mailing address to:

misiukal@hotmail.com

Scott and Bill, We'd have to get Carolyn and Charles to join us to! I would love a trip back to the coast where they have real seafood and warm weather!

Keith, I love the story about your daughter wanting her own tools. I let my 12yo use my brand new Lie Nielson #5 1/2 hand plane last year and she was hooked!

Echo, you are a sage!

Al, The SV would look rather small on an EQ6 mount, but talk about a solid base!

What kind of filters are these?
