From a bill board on divorce we have down here:
"When 'till death do you part' is not happening fast enough." :D

Cool! I'm gonna steal that for a new office slogan...

I'm a whipper snapper...I'm on my first (and hopefully only!) wife of 3 1/2 years. She's not into astronomy, but I don't care! :waytogo:

Fidelity was an issue in my first marrage as well. What is it with young women anyway, I thought it was the guys that messed around, not the gals? I came home from a hunting trip and found mine in the sack with a male model/ part time fireman, yes the shotgun was still loaded but I didnt use it, hows that for self control John. Told her she wasnt worth the shell. Im a firm believer in not doing anything that requires jail time.......................I always love telling this story because it was the dead of winter & so I made the fella drive home buck naked all he got was his wallet & keys, aint that a great way to end a relationship?Dave

Hmm,
Wish id though of it tho. You have a good imagination. I just wanted a trophy was all, I didnt even really get all that upset I was calm and cool. Dosent do much good to loose it. Is a great story tho, could make a movie out of my life I assure you. Would make everyone feel much happier about their run of the mill ordinary lives. Dave

Still on my first one - I waited 29 years to pick her out though. Dated for 3 years before tying the knot. 4th anniversary on the 22nd of this month. Taking her to Texas for some stargazing as an Anniversary/Christmas vacation.

As far as my other relationships - I wouldn't pee in their mouth if their teeth were on fire!!! :flame:

Not that I hold a grudge or anything

Scott

Scott, glad to see you can be a man about it.

I waited 20 years after first close call, dated eight years before tying the knot for the first time (didn't want to ruin my WHOLE life). We've been married nine years now. I've trained her pretty good, but now she thinks she can train me. Oh gawd I'm in so much trouble. :D

Mine too. Both marriages. I thought the same thing you did, that proper young ladies didn't do those things, but it happens. I should have been on my guard from the first experience. Some never learn until it's too late.

Well I'm here to tell ya, it's never going to happen again.

Fidelity is a must or the "til death do us part" clause kicks in.

Those were my feelings both times.

Yeah it did.

I'd have to say I'd take a long focal ratio achro for planetary viewing over my ex-wife. :yay: :roflmao: :yay:

Back to the original question - in the $3500 price range, and given that you are even considering an 8" achro (so this is not a grab-n-go scope), why wouldn't you consider a good newtonian? You could get something in the range of a 12.5"-15" quality dobsonian (look at T-scopes, Starbuckets, etc., which have Royce or Swayze mirrors) plus an equatorial table for high power tracking for that price. These would be better for planets than a 4" apo or 8" achro, and would also be MUCH better for deep sky. The only disadvantage they have is that they are not as easy to use for photography or wide fields, but you didn't mention those as issues.

Hey - there's a thought. If he wants it optimized for planetary work how about a nice Teeter Planet Killer? The 10" F/7 with Royce mirror is only about $2500; add $700 for a Dob Driver II for tracking and goto and he's home clear!

I'm putting together just about that setup now - but was reluctant to mention it here in the "Finderscopes" - oops; I mean "Refractors" forum. :roflmao:

Your suggestion is much better for deep sky, but lacking the contrast, clarity, and pinpoint stars of even an 8" achro at f/15 for planetary viewing.

Hi, Schultze.

I'm in the process of wagering that a long focal length reflector with 15% CO or so will avoid the stereotypical low-contrast, large spot Newt complaints. Give me a little time to evaluate.

I'll bet I would. I'm just happy the one I have is working so far. Kind of hard to shoulder-mount one of these beasts!

Maybe in the future an APO or ED, fro right now I'd like to try some film photography with the AR-6.

Cool! Are you planning to guide manually? I'm eagerly waiting for someone to report on guiding an LXD55 with the LPI setup but I'm not gonna be the guinea pig.

I don't know John. I need to do more research before I commit money to anything.

It won't be untill late spring. I have always wanted to do film photography with a telescope. That was back when it was the only way to do it and I had nice cameras back then.

I'm looking into the LPI system, but I haven't decided on anything yet, except the camera body will be a Canon A1.

A buddy of mine has an LXD55 mount with a 10" Meade SCT on it (used to be one of mine) and plans to do some film work with that in the Spring. I think he intends to guide manually. I've always admired film astro images :bow:but they sound too exacting for me; I can't even get anything worth seeing with a less-demanding CCD imager.

Schultze,
It does happen but there are some of us out here with high morals and values. A good marraige or relationship can be a blessing. I know mine is and I'd hate for you to never experience that in the future because of women with poor judgement and taste. I'm really sorry you guys experienced that level of betrayal.
