Overview:

Welcome to the Cloudy Nights Monthly Challenge Imaging Competition in CCD Imaging & Processing Forum:

This competition is intended to be a fun way for you to improve your imaging abilities and a way for you to see many new images with a variety of equipment. All imagers are welcome and encouraged to enter.

Each month a single object will be selected for the competition by the winner from 2 months previous. Having a one month delay allows voting and selection of the next object and will give a full month's time for entries.

The winner of each competition gets to choose the next object and their image will be included in the Hall of Fame message thread. There are no other prizes.

Please include your imaging details such as location, date, telescope, guiding, exposure time, etc with your submission.

Rules:

1. Have fun! Support other contestants and be polite with your comments.
2. All entries must be captured within the same imaging season. For example, if the December target is the Orion Nebula, you must use images taken during the current winter, not any other year.
3. Image size is limited to 800x800 pixels and 100k in size.
4. Any equipment is allowed to be used in the images including rental equipment; with the only exception of DSLR, since we have another forum specifically for DSLR.
5. All image taking and processing must be done by your team, including equipment setup.
6. Each person may submit only 1 entry per month. However, you may edit your submission and replace the image with a newer one if you wish using the Edit function.
7. Winners will be selected by forum members, the one which receives the highest number of vote will be the winner.

Please submit your image in this thread, comment can be made in the same thread as well.

Alright, well I'll get it started.

Posted Image

Processing even just to this turned out to be a lot harder than I expected.

9x 5 min
Celestron CPC 1100 on HD Wedge; Orion Starshoot Pro v2.0
Autoguiding with PHDGuiding through 80mm ED
Processing in Nebulosity, MaximDL

*note: Imaging was done at f/10, although I crunched it down a bit in Nebulosity. Seeing was iffy and the pixel size on that camera is way too tiny for such a long focal length.

EDIT: replacing new file with data gathered Jan 3 - 9x used instead of 7x.

And I'll follow next:

Antares 6.3 FR
30 second subs in L, HA, OIII and SII 120 subs of L and 60 of OIII, HA and SII. SII used for R, HA for G and OIII for B, 50% layered with L
Stacked in DSS, combined in Nebulosity, further processing with PS4, Carboni Tools.

It's not likely that I'll get back to this again this season, so here is one of mine from back in early October.

M1
DSI-III & Orion 102ED
14 x 15 minutes /w Orion 7nm Ha
12 x 15 minutes /w Schuler 8nm OIII

Since I shoot OSC, I do get signal in green & blue when using the OIII filter. I used both the blue & green channels as well as the red from the Ha subs, to make this image, combining them in Pixinsight.

Probably gonna be alot of entries again this month!

One more.

In this case M1 also stands for "My 1st" narrowband!

Taken over many nights this Jan, 1/1, 1/2, 1/5 and 1/6
  • Orion 8" Newt, Paracorr, Atlas EQ-G, PHD guiding with QHY5
  • ST-8300M, Baader 5nm NB Filters
  • Exposure: Ha, Oiii 17x10m, Sii 10x10m (due to sub yield)
  • HST Palatte
  • Layers developed in ImagesPlus, color combine and final processing in PS
This is a 1000px wide crop sized down to 800px (so not quite a 1:1 crop but close).

Thanks for looking!

main and guiding camera: SBIG ST8-XME
telescope: Meade rcx400 16inch arpeture
all exposures were 2 minutes long and set point of -30 degrees Celsius: 60L, 20R, 20G, 20B, 60Dark, 60Bias

We had some problems at the start which is why I was only able to get in 4 hours worth of light frames instead of 5 like I originally planned.

I'm still a newbie because this is only the 3rd image I have taken with color, so please leave some feed back on what you think I should do next time.
