Mike, let be the first to say "what a fantastically written report!".  I very much enjoyed reading it.  For such a lousy cloudy raining trip (at least for the most part at Okie-Tex), you certainly made the most of things.  Thanks so much for taking time to write it.

Thanks Chucky, I appreciate the compliment, and I am happy that people are reading it.

I hope that my WSP article doesn't take as long, unlike the Okie-Tex aberration the weather was really nice there.

Mike, that’s another great report for your growing library. Your skills certainly extend to writing entertaining stories. I’m sure you will have plenty of entertaining things to write up in April.

Wonderful report, Mike.  Sad to hear about the rain-out but it's great that the community had a good time hanging out.

It occurs to me that for a group of nerds, there is a distinct lack of board games for daytime/downtime... There must be a reason?  Like an ancient feud over a particularly nasty round of Settlers of Catan from years ago...?

If I do ever make it to a star party I'm going to definitely bring a small arsenal of board games!

Allan, thanks.  Peter, thanks for reading, and interesting question and nerd assumption.....

I think some may have played trivial pursuit, but with the availability of streamable movies and small portable projectors, it is pretty easy to watch a movie.  I'd say that most of us are not really nerds like you may think, at least from what I have observed.  Actually, the only reason that I am familiar with the name of the game you mentioned is from watching the Big Bang Theory, and despite enduring 4 years at a small engineering school, I have never played D&D, nor have I wanted to.

I prefer beer tasting and conversation to board games, personally.  I just never got into games or playing cards because I have (over)filled my free time with other things, like building telescopes.  I'm more of an engineer than a nerd, you might say.

I think another reason is that the weather at Okie-Tex is usually so good that spare time is spent observing and sleeping, maybe taking the occasional field trip to visit some nearby park/site, playing some golf in Clayton (nice 9-hole course there) and not much else.

Hope to see you there this year, finally.  No more excuses!  You need to see the Veil in a 32" with nightvision.....

It's been a busy year so far, but I am completing projects and finishing off overdue articles.

Earlier this year, I took a long trip to Australia and a couple of other places, and I have finished the first part of my article about it.

I'd like to invite you to take some time this weekend to read it:

  http://www.loptics.c...019/AU2019.html

There are some other updates coming soon, and then a second part of this article after that.

I hope you enjoy it.  Thank you for reading.

Nice job on the Coolah trip article. It brought back fine memories. Looking forward to the story of the second leg of your trip.

Yep, the pot may be small but it makes a good strong cup. I knew someone would find it as essential as I did. waytogo.gif

It’s funny how one small coffee pot can connect astronomers from around the world.

Mike I think this is the best article you’ve written, but I would say that.

It is funny, isn't it?!?  Other beverages, such as beer and port, have a similar effect, of course.

Thank you very much for your feedback and your compliment above, it means a lot coming from you.  Also thank you for organizing the star party, it was a great experience.  (Part 2 is in the works.)

On another note, here is a link to a client's 20" f/3.0 for those who may not read the other forums often:

  https://www.cloudyni...wood-dobsonian/

This is a 20" f/3.0, 1.25"-thick Pyrex, just like my own 20" f/3.0, but with a different structure.

A couple of other authors wrote excellent articles about the recent SDM Star Party that one of my clients organized and hosted and that I was able to attend.  I've received permission to post pdfs of both articles on my web site.  (Links are also found on my Articles page.)

Bruce Renowden attended the star party and we had a great time observing and sipping some port.  He wrote "Falling In Love Again.... with Astronomy", illustrated using his own photos and a couple that I shot:

http://www.loptics.c...den_article.pdf

Rod Doig also attended, and he wrote an article for Sky and Telescope Australia titled "Big Scopes for a Big Sky", and I provided photos:

http://www.loptics.c...9_BigScopes.pdf

I hope you enjoy them.

Part 2 of my trip article is almost done..... stay tuned!

Part 2 of my trip article, covering my visit to SDM Telescopes, New Zealand, and Hawaii, is now posted:

http://www.loptics.c...9/AU2019p2.html

I hope you have time to read it, and that you enjoy it.

I believe I am finally caught up on writing.... at least until after Okie-Tex 2019!

Thank you to everyone who made my trip possible.

LCO recently made a 32" f/3.0 quartz primary and 7.5" m.a. quartz secondary for a Starstructure telescope (https://starstructure.com/).

The telescope is now installed in a new public observing area of Lowell Observatory, and will be available for public observing in the near future:

  https://lowell.edu/g...ory/telescopes/

There are a total of five telescopes in the new complex, and they are being introduced to the public starting in late September:

  https://lowell.edu/g...escope-reveals/

The 32" f/3.0 is currently the largest telescope at Lowell.  If you're going to be in the area, I hope you can stop by and see it.

I believe that the official Lowell opening for the new telescopes is tomorrow.

I just returned from Okie-Tex and a short side trip to New Mexico.  The Okie-Tex Star Party was superb, and will only get better in the future as a permanent building is constructed for dining and talks.

This year I focused on using nightvision and shooting some photos through the eyepiece to try to show what it will do with a very fast telescope (my 14.5" f/2.55) and the dark Okie-Tex skies.  I hope to have my article done sooner rather than later, so stay tuned for that and all the photos and nightvision images that it will contain!

Two announcements:

1) I have a 13" f/3.0 optical set (with 4.5" m.a. flat) available.  The optics are ready for coating.  Please email me if you are interested.

2) We had a wonderful time at Okie-Tex 2019, and my article is now posted:  http://www.loptics.c...kietex2019.html

I will be updating my nightvision page soon.
