Cleaning 2 Cave mirrors in the same afternoon is what I call a great day! Thank you for the additions Jim. And an early one as well. Nice! That will be the earliest 10" in the registry. I also show the Astronomical Society of Harrisburg as having M704954, a 10" Model C.

Any chance of pictures of the engraving on either of these, especially M-166?

I will try. It is very light. I missed it the first few times I looked at it. And yes, ASH owns 2 Cave scopes, a 12" and a 10". We used to have a 16", too, but that was replaced in the 90's.

Yes, some of the early mirror engraving is very faint. I remember when I first acquired #1163. I looked at the back and my heart sank when I saw no engraving (but it did have a Pancro sticker). After further inspection I found it. One thing that might help when photographing it is to do it in the sun. That helped with mine. Or possibly shine a flashlight at an extreme angle.

Here is the engraving on M-166. I had to play with brightness and contrast to get it to show.

Beautiful. That is Tom Cave Sr.'s engraving for sure.

The mirror is out at this moment, so I'll try again to find any inscriptions on it.

I'd like to get this scope on the "registry".  It replaced a scope in 1955 I was told, and my " letter" (email)

says that according to the ID code, which old info' has been long lost, it was purchased before 1960.

Clear Skies.

Here are pictures of the engraving on serial number M-683669. I have trouble even seeing it in anything but the best light.

There is also this etched on the bottom.

Thank you for those pictures Jim. The name engraved on the back was probably done during a recoat. I have seen many examples of owner's names that were inscribed on the edge or back by the coating company to ensure the mirror was returned to the correct owner.

It has been almost 3 months since the last update and we have 5 new mirrors so time for an update.

Changes from the 10/19/2020 edition are highlighted in yellow.

Cell in red is an entry where I hope to someday verify the date as it doesn't make sense. This was in the description of a Craig's List ad that is long gone. If anyone ever bought mirror 1368 I would really appreciate a picture of it.

If anyone here bought M705381, which is in an 8" f/8 Model B Deluxe that was on AM recently, and could take a picture of the engraving so I can add the date and engraving style I would greatly appreciate it.

Be sure to refresh the page if you've visited before otherwise you may be viewing a previous version.

A total of 302 mirrors are now in the registry.

You didn't include the 2 mirrors I posted?

Try it again. There was an issue with the wiki site this is hosted on which Dan fixed last night. Be sure the date at the top of the registry is 1/10/2021. If not click refresh in your browser.
