Jon,
The focal length is confusing. I plan to measure it and put on a stick-on label.

Yes, the engraving of the actual dimension is a bit of a mess isn't it? f/7 would be ~87.5", call it 88". The first digit looks like an 8 over a 7 although there is a funny tail to the bottom of that 7 if that is what it is. The other digit looks like a 3 over an 8. Maybe it first was engraved as 73, which would be a bit short of f/6, then changed to 88? At first glance it looks like 83 though as those look to be a deeper, similar style. The two 8s look different. Someone goofed for sure.

We have 5 new mirrors so time for an update.

Changes from the 1/10/2021 edition are highlighted in yellow.

Cell in red is an entry where I hope to someday verify the date as it doesn't make sense. This was in the description of a Craig's List ad that is long gone. If anyone ever bought mirror 1368 I would really appreciate a picture of it.

If anyone here bought M705381, which is in an 8" f/8 Model B Deluxe that was on AM recently, and could take a picture of the engraving so I can add the date and engraving style I would greatly appreciate it.

Jon,

Thanks for registering my scopes.

Clear Skies.

You're very welcome. I always love to add more mirrors to the registry. It still surprises me that we have managed to account for 307 of them. That is probably about 2% of Cave's total serialized production. That may not sound like a lot but the last one was made 41 years ago so I feel like it is a pretty good sample. Now if we could only figure out what was going on at Cave from 1961 to 1964 and why those years seem so under reported.

Another Cave brought back home to Long Beach!   This will be my second Cave.

I recently purchased the 10" F8 mirror #M672716  that was recently sold on AstroMart and am awaiting its arrival!    I believe this mirror has changed owners a few times and the earliest documented CN owner is ChasLX200.

New owner:

Michael McFall of Long Beach, CA

New info:

Recoating performed by Terry Ostahowski 6/2019

My first Cave is a 6" F8 from a Student Deluxe model, but there are no markings or serial number on the pyrex mirror, with the only marking being a Pancro sticker on the back.  It has an excellent figure and the scope dates to 1973 or 1974.

Thank you for the update Michael. It will be in the next edition of the registry.

I had that mirror recorded in the first edition of the registry on 2/26/2011. But it was noted as M672713. Mark Dearing was recorded as the owner. This was from a description and not a photograph.

Here is a brief thread from 2010 where Chas discussed it:

https://www.cloudyni...te-makers-name/

Here is an ad for it on AM:

https://astromart.co...craftsman-mount

I don't have an AM account to see a date or owner on that ad.

I noted a change of ownership to Larry Thaxton in the 4/14/2011 registry edition and that it was an OTA only without a Cave mount.

I received an email from Larry with a picture which resulted in a change in the serial number to M672716 and noted the engraving was cursive in the 10/9/2011 edition.

Hi Michael and welcome to the Classic Telescope Forum. Thank you for the new addition to the registry. I will have it in the next edition that I will post here in a month or so, when I have a few more new additions. Just a note - a 10" f/5 would be considered a Richest Field Telescope model, which Cave added to the RFT line up in 1974. In some ads it was called a Supercompact Newtonian.

Can you add my scope to the mirror registry.  Mirror etching was in cursive, Cave Optical, #M761583, Mar 19, 1976, F/4.5, 36-5/16 F.L.  The scope is an RFT on a light weight (1") mount which seems adequate.

I have owned the scope for about two years, I added springs to provide even pressure on the clutch, built a little bracket to support the sight glass for the declination setting circle, added some springs on the secondary for easier collimation, added lock nuts on the secondary shaft to keep it stable, and replaced a few screws here and there.  The scope was reasonably clean when I got it, I waxed the outside of the tube for protection, but otherwise have not done anything to improve the cosmetics.  The original counter weights were replaced by some pretty crude discs and a 2lb weight from Big 5 - someday I will try to track down some nicer weights.

Viewing and tracking have been good, I have taken it to quite a few public nights/outreach events, it will be nice when we can get back to doing those.

I pulled the mirror for recoating by Optic Wave which allowed me to capture the mirror registry information.

Hi Chuck and thank you for the addition to the registry. It sounds like you have made some nice improvements. I have found the lightweight mounts more than adequate for anything up to an 8" f/6. I have always received great service from OWL. I even had him refigure one of my Cave mirrors that did not test very well.

With yours I have 5 new mirrors since the last update so here is a new one with it included.....

I noticed that serial number 738387 was dated 7/26/2719. It's not a simple typo as nothing about the year fits.

Just a heads up.

Good eye. That error has been in there since the 2/24/2018 edition. Ooops.

The link in my post above now goes to the 6/4/2021 edition with this corrected.
