Hi - I've discovered an apparent supernova in the faint galaxy IC 3862 in CVn at mag 16.2 on 2011 Mar 18 and rising. Below is my discovery image and further images for March 18/19/20 together with discovery reference CBAT TOCP page outlined below - check it out on Bright SNe Webpage - hope it's of interest ;)

Terrific find! Have you been able to or are you going to put a video up of the changing magnitude? Your videos are a pleasure to watch.

Congratulations!

Might I ask - were you actively looking for SNe or was the discovery accidental?

Thanks everyone for interest and comments - much appreciated.

Special thanks also to Guy Hurst [UK Supernova Patrol] and Tom Boles [top SNe hunter >125 SNe!] for registering discovery with IAU and to my fellow UK SN hunters who obtained the requested follow-up images below. An official IAU designation awaits a hi-res pro spectrum to define SN class eg type I or II etc and currently the full moon interfers ;)

Didn't know you were a closet SN hunter... given the number of scopes other people use and your light pollution, this is a really great discovery! Gives us all hope! Really subtle difference, I would not have picked it up!

Well done, have a beer on me!

Thanks for your support - tonight's image [Mar 22] under very poor transparency - apparent SN holding up ;)
