what would make the image on one side of focus sharper than the other side. the other night i was collimating my sct and i noticed that the ring pattern was a bit sharper on one side of focus.

SA would do this. Any scope not completely cooled will show differn't inside and outside patterns. If the infocus image is to your liking, don't worry about the differnces. Very few if any SCTs show really good star tests but perform just fine.
