First off, I would like to publicly thank Evan (Nave) for letting me know about this rare telescope for sale. It was posted on Craigslist and Evan spotted it within a couple hours and sent me an email. Thank you!

I think we have seen a Goto #103, #105, #106. These are scopes from the pre-Hy Score days and generally date from the 50's to the early 60's. Prior to that Goto had more rare telescopes like the Diana, Apollon, and Uranus that was also posted here some time ago. You can see all my individual flyers for these telescopes here Goto Flyers

This telescope was listed by the seller as "mint condition, never used" I was in for quite a shock as when they pulled it out, it was a very well used mess. But, it was also generally complete with OTA, 1 of 3 eyepieces, Sunglass, original instructions and inspection card, mount, finder, box in good condition, and all original hardware except for 1 3mm screw and one finder set screw. The best surprise was that it was an f20! I had never seen one in person.

I have spent about 10-12 hours getting the telescope picture ready. There was no tripod, but amazingly, I had one that had been sitting around my house for 6-7 years. That tripod had no eyepiece tray, but the purchased kit had a tray laying in the box.. What luck!

I have the telescope set up outside for first light tonight. Attached are some pictures.

Steve,

What a fantastic merge of tech and art. I love these old Goto Kogaku scopes. And 60mm and an f/20! What a beauty! I love seeing all that hardware proudly cast with GOTO. Very nice stuff! This one goes beyond just the tripod to mount hardware with the cast logo like my '57 60 X 900 has.

And I love how Evan shares... I owe him for 3 remarkable classic scopes already and I love that he PM'd you about this beauty and not me, as I've got a different f/20 heading my way which is no doubt my very last classic scope purchase ever.

So how is that first light?

First light is going well. Jupiter is low, so I am waiting for it to get a bit higher. I did check out altair and a couple other stars in aquila for a start test. All looks good. I was surprised collimation was so good as all I did was measure the push screws and set them all the same and reassemble the cell.

Wow, Steve!

If that thing was "well used", you must have done a bang up restoration job before posting this!

Beautiful scope!

For a half-century old telescope, it appears to have cleaned up right good.

Glad to see it out already!

It's in good hands.

I have learned quite a few tricks for restoration from the 7 years on CN :) Goto also sent me some of the exact paint they used on my 6" which exactly matched the paint on this mount. Also, remember, I was expecting "mint condition, never used" so my expectations were high especially since I spent about an hour on the phone before making the 4 hr drive.

First light was awesome! I was surprised to still detect some purple around a de-focused Vegas. But, the de-focused rings looked perfect and the double-double was a nice split at 67x. Jupiter was crisp/sharp with bands and some glimpses of detail.

Back outside....it's cold tonight 55

Was thinking the same thing. How much fun was that to clean up. Looks gorgeous. Love the hardware.

When you get the chance Steve, can we see a close-up of the tag on the case?
